The SDF was started in June 2000 in order to provide a home for those martial arts Groups, Clubs and individuals who have an interest in the REAL self-defence aspects of the Martial Arts.
With the humble beginning of 5 clubs and 100 members, at the end of its 6th year (June 2006) we have over 50 clubs and 3,000 members.. Now the fastest growing and foremost Self-Defence organisation in the UK

The Founder & Head is Dave Turton 8th Dan, officially the highest graded authentic self-defence instructor in the country. He is the MAN the other experts seek out for their tuition. Top names like: GEOFF THOMPSON, JAMIE O'KEEFE, KEVIN O'HAGAN and many more, including National & International champions from such diverse arts as : Karate, Ju-Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Freestyle, Kickboxing, MMA & many others. All have come to Dave for tuition.
Dave also writes articles for several artial arts magazines, hosts a forum Q&A section on Geoff Thompson's website, he is a published author, and in 2003 was inducted into the COMBAT MARTIAL ARTS HALL OF FAME for his outstanding contributions to realistic combat for over 40 years. Also in 2006 Dave was awarded the "Karl Tanswell Self-Defence Instructor of the year" Award.
